2011 Lions

I traveled down to Allen Park Monday with writer Scott Keyes (MidMichigan Sport Scene) to watch the Lions go through their morning workout.  The new deal between owners and players have done away with ‘two-a-day’ workouts.  Pictured above is Detroit Lion’s Head Coach Jim Schwartz talking to the media following Monday morning’s workout.  Most of his questions centered around recent acquisition of Tennessee Middle Linebacker Stephen Tulloch.

Over the weekend the Lions had signed the Free Agent for a reported 3.25 million for one year.  This, hopefully, will give the Lions much needed depth in the linebacking core.

During the workout, much attention was paid to Matthew Stafford.  Hurt for much of his tenure in Detroit, the obvious question will be whether or not he will be able to stay healthy in this high expectation year for the Lions.

It appeared that Central Michigan’s Jeff Maddox was getting Rookie treatment carrying Stafford’s gear off the field at the end of a very hot and sticky practice.

Even though it was mid 80s and sticky at 10am in the morning, I was amazed to see how sharp and crisp practice was.  All drills were short in duration and transition from one to the next was quick.

Standing with Sammie Hill is Nadamukong Suh.  Suh had quite the rookie season with the Lions as a defensive linemen.  Besides scoring a touchdown (against Washington) and attempting a field goal, he was picked as a starter for the Pro Bowl and named to the All Pro Team.  Detroit success this year will largely depend on what kind of year he has.  Many have picked the Lions to have a winning season.  Predictions for the most part have the Lions finishing second in the NFC North behind the Packers.

A personal plus for me was finding a Detroit Lion Hall of Fame’r, Charlie Sanders before practice talking to Michigan’s Jim Brandstetter.
