A Week of Great Competition – Little to Show for it!

It was a great week!  We battled Cancer, the #3 Basketball team in the state, and took on our closest foe, Alma.  But when the dust cleared, we had little to show for it (if you were looking for victories), we managed just a single victory.

The competition started on the mat.  After beating up on an out-manned Ovid Elsie wrestling team, the Bluejay Matmen took on the visiting Panther’s.  The Bluejays themselves had been battling injuries and skin infections the last few weeks.  But, on this night, they would only have one regular that couldn’t go.  Even with a healthy squad, the bluejays were unable to muster a win over Alma._hbv3714

The next day, the girl’s basketball team battled Cancer and league cross over opponent Caro.  Coach Brotherton and the Lady Jays conducted a fund raising event called “Lady Jays vs Breast Cancer”.  They were specifically raising money for ‘Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund‘.  They raised over $530, sold over 210 t-shirts and sold over 150 ‘Hearts of Hope‘.  The hearts were to honor those who have battled some form of cancer.  In addition, the Shepherd Coaches all wore tennis shoes to honor “N_hbv36871ational Coaches vs Cancer Week“.  So that part was definitely a win!  Way to go Ladies.  The basketball game vs Caro was also a battle and also ended in a win!. The fourth quarter proved to be the turning point.  After trailing most of the game, the Jays stepped up the defense in the last quarter and came back for an exciting victory!

Friday saw state ranked (#3) Bridgeport come to town in the league cross-over matchup.  The gym was packed to rafters, the likes of which haven’t been seen for a number of years.  The Jay’s came out of the gates fast sporting a 2 pt lead near the end of the 1st quarter.  But a disasterous second quarter put them down double digits.  They never were able to recover from this deficit.  They did battle the entire game and even won the fourth quarter.  But in the end, the ‘Bear Cats’ ended the Jay’s hope for an unbeaten season.  But, with half the season left, it’s time for the 10-1 Jays to get back on the horse and ride it to a league victory!
